Uniheat shipping warmers are manufactured in five temperature durations, 20 hour, 30 hour, 40 hour, plus 60 hour and 72 hour Jumbo warmers.

These graphs represent the average surface temperature of the shipping warmer in Fahrenheit, versus time, and not the temperature reached in a shipping carton.

For example the 60 hour Jumbo shipping warmer has a higher surface operating temperature than the 72 hour jumbo warmer.

The Uniheat shipping warmers were developed to provide a much smoother time versus temperature output, compared to that of a hand or body warmer.

Hand and body warmers are designed for human use, and manufactured to provide a quick high temperature heat for the body.

When hand or body warmers are used to ship livestock, the initial temperature surge of the hand / body warmer may result in initial overheating of livestock, followed by a rapid temperature drop in transit.

Which Uniheat Shipping Warmers to Use?

Ultimately your choice of shipping warmers will depend on how long you expect your consignment to be in transit and the temperature required for the consignment. It is virtually impossible to give a strict rule on what warmers will suit your particular application due to many variables, not limited to the following for example:

1. Thermal insulation properties of the shipping carton.
2. Shipping Carton dimensions.
3. Outside ambient air temperature and possible fluctuations whilst in transit.
4. Nature of the consignment; tropical fish, reptiles, plants, liquids, insects, orchids, flowers, live foods, organs, seedlings or other temperature sensitive organisms all having various temperature requirements.

For example, a tropical Discus fish for example would be more comfortable at a higher in carton temperature than another tropical fish, the Zebra Danio. Hence it is recommended that new users carry out their own mock tests of their chosen shipping method before actually shipping livestock.

In colder temperatures, it may be most beneficial to use the 20 hour shipping warmer, which generates the highest surface temperature in conjunction with other warmers of longer heat durations according to the expected shipping duration.

Uniheat Shipping Warmer Weights

The 20, 30 and 40 hour warmers average around 88g per unit. The 60 and 72 jumbo warmers weigh on average 225g.

The latter are obviously more expensive, containing more than 2.5 the contents of the lower heat duration warmers. However, these can work out more cost effective to use singularly for shippers using multiple 20, 30 or 40 hour warmers per shipping carton.

Please take the shipping warmer weights in to consideration when placing your orders. Generally it will cost the same to ship a 3kg parcel containing 35 warmers as a 22 - 27 kg parcel containing 240 warmers. Unfortunately we don't govern the courier Company rates!

How do Uniheat Shipping Warmers Work?

Shipping Warmers are soft light weight pouches containing a mixture of iron powder, charcoal, salt, sawdust, and vermiculite. On opening the packet and exposing the shipping warmers to the oxygen in the air, an oxidation process takes place within the pack generating heat. As with all chemical heat packs / pads shipping warmers require oxygen from the air to perform at optimum temperature during their lifespan.

Uniheat Shipping Warmers - Points To Note!

Uniheat shipping warmers should not be placed directly next to livestock, but attached to the inner of the shipping container lid with tape prior to closing.

Placing the Uniheat shipping warmer directly against a tropical fish bag or close to reptiles and other animals, crustaceans, inverts or fauna, may result in over heating of the specimen, ultimately resulting in discomfort or death.

It is important to carry out your own tests on your preferred packaging method prior to shipping your livestock to evaluate the number of shipping warmers required to sustain your desired in box temperature during transit in the current weather conditions.

Please do not attempt to ship tropical fish and reptiles in cardboard boxes during cold weather, use a proper polystyrene shipping carton with cardboard outer.

It is recommended that for newcomers to livestock shipping that a mock trial is carried out within the proposed shipping carton(s) over the expected shipping time duration, in order to make sure that your chosen packaging technique is satisfactory before shipping any livestock.

Depending on container size, livestock or fauna temperature needs, and packaging material, more then one warmer may be required.

Oxygen Starvation

All air activated shipping warmers require oxygen to work at the correct temperature, if insufficient oxygen is available within the shipping carton, the shipping warmer will eventually expire, only to reheat after the carton is opened and a fresh oxygen supply is provided.

In the case of shipping reptiles, insects, live foods and other air breathing livestock, the shipping carton is normally vented with holes pierced through the carton allow oxygen to the shipping warmer and the reptile.

Heavily laden tropical fish cartons with a small internal air gap or tight fitting lids, may also require a small 5-10mm vent hole in the shipping carton to provide sufficient oxygen for the shipping warmers to function correctly during transit.

The vent hole must penetrate the polystyrene carton outer only and not the cardboard outer, except if the cardboard is coated on the outer with a substance that will not allow oxygen to penetrate through the cardboard.

Warmers that expire in transit only to re heat upon the opening of the carton have been starved of oxygen, consider using that vent hole!

Uniheat Shipping Warmers - Do's and Do Nots!

Do allow the Uniheat shipping warmer to reach operating temperature before packing.

Do allow the Uniheat shipping warmers to heat up in a restricted environment, e.g. a pocket or the fold of a towel. They are not designed to heat a room.

Do make sure there is sufficient air circulation around the warmer within the shipping carton..

Do read all instructions on the reverse of the Uniheat packaging.

Don't fire oxygen from an oxygen bottle into the Uniheat warmer in an attempt to make it heat quicker. It will, but speeding up the chemical reaction may result in an earlier expiration.

Don't cover the red indicator stripes on the Uniheat warmer.

Don't allow the Uniheat warmer to become damp or wet in transit, it may expire.

Don't allow a Uniheat warmer to come into direct contact with livestock.
